LQG vs. SQG vs. VSQG

EPA sorts hazardous-waste generators into three size classes — LQG, SQG, and VSQG — based on how much hazardous waste a facility generates in a calendar month, not on how dangerous the waste is or what industry the facility is in. As of the August 26, 2026 snapshot, a real SQG facility on US Waste Index shows what this classification looks like in practice.

Generator size is about volume, not danger

A generator's size class (see our guide on the generator role generally) is a threshold based on the quantity of hazardous waste it generates per calendar month, plus how much it accumulates on-site — it says nothing about how hazardous the waste itself is. A facility generating a small volume of highly dangerous waste and one generating a larger volume of a milder hazardous waste can land in different size classes for reasons that have nothing to do with relative danger.

VSQG — Very Small Quantity Generator

The smallest class, for facilities generating minimal monthly quantities of hazardous waste. VSQGs face the lightest set of RCRA requirements of the three classes, though they still must properly identify and manage their waste.

SQG — Small Quantity Generator

The middle class, for facilities generating more than the VSQG threshold but less than the LQG threshold in a given month. SQGs face more recordkeeping and accumulation-time requirements than VSQGs, but less than LQGs.

LQG — Large Quantity Generator

The largest class, for facilities generating at or above the LQG threshold in a given month. LQGs face the most extensive RCRA requirements of the three — the shortest on-site accumulation time limits and the most detailed recordkeeping and reporting obligations.

Why the size class matters

The size class determines which specific RCRA rules apply to a facility — how long it can store waste on-site, what records it has to keep, and what reporting is required. It's a different axis entirely from a facility's handler role (generator vs. Transporter vs. TSDF, see our guide on that) — a facility's permit records can show a size class and a role together.

What does LQG, SQG, and VSQG stand for?

How is a generator's size class determined?

Does a bigger size class mean more dangerous waste?
